About This Piece
The Sonoran Desert has a particular quality at golden hour that photographers and painters have chased for as long as anyone has been paying attention. The light turns warm and specific, the mountains go amber, and ordinary scenes become something worth stopping for. Desert Companions finds two horses in that light, one black and one white, touching noses along a well-worn trail as the day winds down.
Behind them, saguaros and sun-gilded brittlebush line the path, and the Catalina Mountains rise in the background with the geological drama this range takes on at day’s end. The detail rewards a close look: worn leather halters that speak to years of use, the texture of desert sand under their hooves, the specific plants of a Sonoran landscape after monsoon rains. These aren’t generic Southwest horses in a generic Southwest setting. This is southern Arizona, and it looks exactly like itself.
Desert Companions is the debut piece in a Sonoran Art series celebrating the bond between people and the animals who share desert life with them. Future pieces will feature other working and companion animals against authentic Sonoran landscapes. This is where it begins.
Print & Production
Desert Companions is printed on metal. Aluminum gives the golden-hour light a warm glow and makes the contrast between the black and white horses striking, while the fine detail- the worn leather, the sand, the brittlebush blooms- stays crisp up close. It’s a piece worth living with, and metal holds its color for years to come.
Each piece is printed directly onto lightweight aluminum with a brilliant, scratch-resistant finish and arrives with a French cleat hanging system, ready to hang.
