Some Sonoran Desert sunsets are beautiful; others stop you mid-step. Sonoran Crimson is the second kind. The sun drops behind the mountain peaks, and the sky answers all at once, crimson and orange stacking up in layers, the whole western horizon going theatrical for about ten minutes before it’s over.
Saguaro and ocotillo turn to silhouette against the burning sky, their familiar shapes reduced to pure form. A lone Gambel’s quail holds its spot in the foreground, unhurried and attentive, entirely at home in a landscape putting on its best show of the day. The mountain ridgeline glows with a thin edge of light as the sun slips behind it, and then the sky takes over completely.
The quail earns its place. Without it, this is a beautiful sunset. With it, the scene has scale, life, and the particular feel of the Sonoran Desert at evening, a place inhabited by creatures that belong here far more than we do, going about their day the way they always have, with or without an audience.
Print & Production
Sonoran Crimson is printed on metal, and the sky is the reason. Aluminum renders the saturated crimson and orange with a luminosity no other surface can match, and the silhouettes of the saguaros, ocotillo, and quail stay sharp and graphic.
Each piece is printed directly onto lightweight aluminum with a brilliant, scratch-resistant finish and arrives with a French cleat hanging system, ready to hang.
