There are Sonoran Desert sunsets, and then there are the ones that stop you mid-step. Sonoran Crimson is the second kind. The sun drops behind the mountain peaks, and the sky responds all at once — crimson and orange stacking up in layers, the whole western horizon going theatrical for about ten minutes before it is over.
Saguaros and ocotillo go to silhouette against the burning sky, their familiar shapes reduced to pure form against the color behind them. A solitary Gambel’s quail holds its position in the foreground — unhurried, attentive, entirely at home in a landscape putting on its best show of the day. The mountain peaks catch the last direct light before the sun clears them, and then the sky takes over completely.
The quail earns its place. Without it, the scene is a beautiful sunset. With it, the scene has scale, life, and the particular quality of the Sonoran Desert at evening — inhabited by creatures that belong here far more than we do, going about their day the same way they always have, with or without an audience.
